Viktor Gyökeres has an agreement with Sporting Club de Portugal which means he can be sold for around €30m less than the €100m release clause, providing a big boost to Arsenal’s hopes of signing him.
That’s according to Record, who explain the situation as it becomes increasingly likely the striker leaves Sporting this summer.
They say that Arsenal are the most serious candidate for Gyökeres at this moment in time and there’s a special agreement between Sporting and the striker which can help make the transfer happen.
Gyökeres struck a deal with Sporting at the end of the 2023/24 season that he could leave for €70-75m this summer based on him turning down a salary increase.
He was offered a bigger pay packet, after his impressive debut season in Portugal, which would have seen him increase to €1.5m per year net.
The striker turned this down and instead negotiated that, as part of his salary sacrifice, they would facilitate his departure for a more affordable fee than the €100m written into his contract. It’s a gentleman’s agreement but is being respected.
That fee is believed to be €70-75m and reports have stated that Arsenal have prepared an offer of €70m to sign the striker. No offer has been received by Sporting as yet, though.
That gentleman’s agreement is in place for him leave and suitors don’t need to reach €100m because of it.
