Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak will not be featuring for Sweden in this international break, having picked up an injury that has ruled him out of contention.

That’s according to Fotboll Skanalen, who cover comments from coach Janne Anderson, who is disappointed to have lost the forward.

The newspaper explains that after watching Isak bag a double in Newcastle’s draw with West Ham over the weekend, there was a ‘nightmare message’ for them today after their initial training session.

Isak had linked up with his international teammates on Monday but arrived with an injury and after undergoing a medical examination by the country’s staff, it was clear he was not fit.

Thus, he has been cleared to return to Newcastle and miss the international break, during which Sweden take on Moldova in a friendly and then Belgium in European Championship qualifying.

That latter game is one that they must win to have a chance of reaching the tournament in Germany next year, thus his absence will be sorely felt.

“Very sad for Alexander Isak and for us,” Andersson commented on the matter, with FS adding that the striker’s absence is a ‘heavy blow’ for him and his team.

Isak has been a key, starting player for him and his staff in recent years and the direct lack of a replacement, with the country not calling anyone up this time around, a problem they now need to overcome.
