The storm around Ronald Koeman hasn’t yet fully made it to the Netherlands. With the Dutch media just getting over Crystal Palace sacking Frank de Boer, the idea of Koeman being under serious pressure at Everton isn’t really something that’s taken hold yet.
However, it’s not ignored that Koeman isn’t exactly having the best of times. Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf on Monday say Koeman has a player ‘headache’, and that will have been caused by Wayne Rooney’s recent drink drive arrest and subsequent conviction.
Koeman is said to be especially displeased because, as De Telegraaf put it, ‘Rooney had promised to behave during the contract negotiations’.
Rooney’s potential role in replacing Romelu Lukaku is seen as bigger in the Dutch media than perhaps it is here.
Given the former England captain’s recent seasons with Manchester United, it was unrealistic to believe he’d slot in at Goodison Park and replace Lukaku’s goals, despite a promising start.
Still, the broken promise is just another part of Koeman’s striker ‘headache’, and De Telegraaf hope for a ‘rosier’ Everton situation in the not too distant future.
