Perhaps some Leeds United fans still have no idea of how big the club has been in Argentina for the past year, so we can bring some more proof of it today.
Olé, the biggest sports newspaper in the country, on Friday had one and a half pages about the Whites’ win over Barnsley.
It’s not like they’re hiding it at the end of the edition. They published the story on pages eight and nine, making it prominent, and before their coverage of Boca Juniors, River Plate and all the local clubs.
They first had a chronicle by Demian Meltzer, and his focus is on how the ‘bielsismo’ has been a success in the Championship, even though there are many Argentine fans who don’t like this style.
They later highlight the biggest achievements in Marcelo Bielsa’s career, and also a story about the possibilities of the Whites getting promotion without being on the pitch, which ended up happening with Huddersfield’s win over West Brom.
To end the Leeds United part, Olé brings a short text written by Rafael Bielsa, the manager’s brother, in which he says Marcelo is a ‘rockstar’ in England.
“I didn’t visit Marcelo in England, but I read that in Leeds he’s a rockstar phenomenon. He’s loved, it’s a club that fulfils him and he handles the locker room. He likes identity and takes into account the facilities to develop his project: the environment, the technological level, the capacity of collaborators, the food, the gyms… And in the Premier League it’s always better to arrive with a team where you know all the players. I haven’t spoken to him in a long time, and he didn’t say a word to me. But the question would be: how can he not renew if he’s the champion? If he achieves the goal, it will be difficult for him to say no.”
