Roberto De Zerbi would be the ideal appointment for Napoli this summer now that he has left Brighton and Hove Albion.
That’s according to his former teammate and Napoli player Gennaro Iezzo, who believes De Zerbi would be ideal to restart the project in Naples.
De Zerbi is set to be a free agent this summer after coming to an agreement with Brighton to terminate his contract early.
The belief is that he won’t remain out of work after the job he’s done with the Seagulls over the last two seasons, taking them into Europe for the first time in their history with an exciting, attacking brand of football.
He’s won plenty of plaudits during his time in England and plenty of admirers too, particularly back in his native Italy, where they’ve loved him from afar.
It’s seen him linked with several Serie A sides this summer as a result, with Juventus, AC Milan and Napoli all on the hunt for a new manager after disappointing campaigns.
Napoli in particular want to reset after a disappointing title defence and Iezzo believes the departing Brighton man is the ideal candidate.
“Roberto would be the most suitable profile to restart Napoli,” he said.
“He is very ready to coach an important team, he is very well prepared and always up to date. He knows how to change his way of playing based on the team and he would do great things at Napoli.
“Who to choose between him and Conte? It’s not an easy choice, we all know Conte’s CV. De Zerbi is young and ambitious, he has ideas very close to mine and I would prefer him to Conte. Every year he makes his own story, so I don’t see why Napoli shouldn’t resume the footballing path that led Spalletti to the Scudetto.
“The important thing is never to copy for the sake of copying, but to put something new into it and draw inspiration from a winning path.
“Something needs to change, so the choice of the coach must not be dictated by yet another attempt to recreate the alchemy of the Scudetto. Whoever comes to the bench must be left free to work without paying too much attention to the forms and posts.”
