If there is one man who had a terrible 2022, it was Aston Villa striker Wesley Moraes, whose efforts to revive his ailing career very much failed.
The striker returned from a loan spell in Brazil to join Levante in the summer in the hope he could find his goalscoring touch in Europe.
Instead, the move was proving to be something of a disaster, with various reports on how much he was struggling and how Levante were getting a little tired of him.
At the end of December, we covered how he had gotten close to 1000 minutes without scoring a goal, while his representatives later admitted he was ‘suffering’.
Well, it seems 2023 could have already provided the new start the Aston Villa man was looking for as Mundo Deportivo report that he has finally found the back of the net.
They explain that the Brazilian striker ‘scored the winning goal’ in Levante’s Copa del Rey clash with Getafe last night.
Wesley started the game and appeared to be on his way to another goalless display before he headed home an injury-time corner to seal a 3-2 win and qualify Levante for the last 16 of the competition.
That was his first goal since arriving from Aston Villa in the summer and saw him celebrate for two reasons; first for securing qualification for his club and for the ‘release’ of finally scoring after a drought that went over 1000 minutes.
The striker was visibly delighted with the goal and celebrated with all of his teammates before being ‘embraced’ by coach Javi Calleja.
The hope is now that he can kick on for the remainder of the season, regain his place in the side and finally ‘change his fortunes’.
