Michael Beale’s Rangers currently find themselves second in the Scottish Premiership, nine points behind Celtic and with a goal difference 28 worse than their Glasgow rivals.
They beat Kilmarnock 3-1 at the weekend, with goals from Connor Goldson, Fashion Sakala and James Tavernier.
During the summer, the Rangers defence lost Calvin Bassey, who had impressed so much for them last season that there were rumours of a potential move to the Premier League.
Instead, he swapped Rangers for Ajax and has had a difficult period settling in at the Dutch club. There are many harsh pundits in the Netherlands, and they were quick to criticise him heavily.
Then there followed a period when Bassey was out of the team for Ajax, but much to the 23-year-old’s credit he’s fought back and is now getting praise… even from the Dutch media.
Monday’s edition of AD concedes that after ‘half a year of great doubts’ since his arrival from Rangers, Bassey is doing well and fans are ‘starting to embrace’ him.
The €20m that Ajax paid Rangers was seen as a huge fee for Ajax, and that’s been part of the problem, but AD now say he’s reaching the level that such a club demands.
He’d already had that level at Rangers, of course.
