Basically an Anderlecht player if the Belgian media are to be believed, Matz Sels’ loan from Newcastle still hasn’t been made official.

The Belgian goalkeeper, who was bought by the Geordies last summer, failed to make much of an impact during his first season at St James’ Park, to such an extent that despite spending £5.6m on him, he only made 14 appearances in all competitions for the first-team.

Having passed his medical tests with Anderlecht, it shouldn’t be long before the 25-year-old’s return to Belgium is complete, with DH estimating the ‘end of the week’ as a realistic timeline.

The Belgian outlet claim that Newcastle are the ones holding the deal up, since their relationship with the Jupiler Pro League side isn’t ‘optimal’.

However, in doing so, Anderlecht are making a lot of sacrifices, notably in the salary department, as DH claim the goalkeeper earns a ‘normal wage in England’, which translates to £50k/week post-tax.

While that might be the case in the Premier League (and even then…), we’re pretty sure most Championship, League One and League Two footballers would be delighted to know they’re currently being grossly underpaid.

With Anderlecht taking on nearly all of his wages, that will make him the best paid player at the club, ahead of top scorer Lukasz Teodorczyk.

He better deliver then…
