On July 27th, Manchester United announced they’d agreed a deal to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.
The Premier League club had been interested in the defender since his time at Lens, and had unsuccessfully fought against Los Blancos for his signing. Since the Frenchman moved to Real Madrid there had been repeat claims of ongoing interest from Old Trafford, and that became more serious this summer.
Varane had been keen on a new adventure for a while, reported the Spanish media, and had become frustrated at Madrid as the club offered him far less wages than new signing David Alaba.
That gave Manchester United an opportunity to seal the deal, and they reached an agreement with Real Madrid in July. Following a post-Euro 2020 holiday, Varane travelled to England and underwent quarantine before going through a medical.
An announcement has been delayed, and a source has informed Sport Witness that the delay has been due to image rights. That isn’t thought to be a threat to the deal, and it will be sorted out in the coming days, or sooner.
In addition, we’ve been told the player trained on Thursday.
There had been suggestions Varane would wear an unusual shirt number, however, Sport Witness has also been informed that may not be the case. With Amad Diallo set to go out on loan, the defender would now be edging towards taking the No.19 shirt.
