To say that Manchester United’s start to the season has been poor would be a bit of an understatement.

Yes, the Red Devils started the season with two wins, but what followed has been far from what many expected from a second year Erik ten Hag side.

In fact, the arrivals of the likes of André Onana were meant to improve Manchester United, but there are some in Cameroon, such as analyst Aimé Bonny, relayed by Actu Cameroun, believe the Inter Milan player made a mistake by signing for the Premier League side.

This is the same player who was key to getting Inter Milan to a Champions League final, and certainly wasn’t expecting to be losing 3-1 at home against an admittedly very much in-form Brighton.

While some will blame the defence for the goals that Onana has conceded at Manchester United this season, Bonny doesn’t believe that is the case and the goalkeeper should be taking some of the blame.

He said: “A striker who doesn’t score would not be taken seriously if he said that his form was due to midfielders who control the ball with their shins. You can’t say the defenders have the level of Arnold Moukoudi, who has never won a game with his club Saint-Etienne.

“It’s harsh but it’s the reality of the highest level. At this rate, the best goalkeeper in the world (according to France Football Cameroon) will unfortunately going to end up on the bench. His choice of Manchester United was a mistake, I insist.”

While we are a long way from Ten Hag dropping Onana, we must not forget that Manchester United also signed Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahçe this season.

The Turkish goalkeeper was certainly bought to provide competition, but the idea will have been for him to mostly be a backup and occasional cup player.

Still, there’s no denying that more was expected from Onana in these early fixtures.
