Raphael Varane has been linked to Manchester Untied once again over the past 24 hours, with Sky Sports pushing the idea of interest. It makes some sense, Jose Mourinho is a big fan, and Manchester United could do with some added quality in the position.
The biggest problem for Manchester United would be persuading Varane to leave Real Madrid if he doesn’t want to. Choosing Madrid over Manchester United in the first place, the French defender has had some distinct ups and downs since doing so.
Injury problems have never been far away and, especially a couple of years ago, there were genuine concerns in the Madrid press about Varane’s long term physical state.
But the player is currently on an up, and asked by L’Equipe why he didn’t take the chance to join Manchester United a year ago, Varane said: “I preferred to discuss it with the leadership, the coach, to find out if they trusted me. As was that the case, I got my head down.”
The comments are very similar to others Varane gave to L’Equipe earlier this year: “In fact, I mostly wondered if the club was in line with my project, namely to play. The president and the coach told me they were going in my direction. I put my head down and I worked before and during the pre-season training.”
Raphael Varane seems happy to stay at Real Madrid as long as he’s an important player for Zinedine Zidane and Florentino Perez.
