Guaranteed second place in the Scottish Premiership, it’s fair to say Rangers are back and settled in the top flight, and their next step will be to try and dethrone Celtic.

In order to do that, they will need to bolster their squad a bit more, with the centre-back position being looked at according to Yahoo! Sport in France.

The French outlet claim that Steven Gerrard is interested in bringing Rennes defender Mexer to Ibrox for the 2019-20 campaign, as the Mozambique international’s contract with the Ligue 1 side is due to expire in June.

However, Rangers will face some competition for the 30-year-old’s services, as Yahoo! explain both Eintracht Frankfurt and Bordeaux are more advanced avenues.

Arriving from Nacional in Portugal back in 2014, Mexer has been one of the more consistent performers for the club this season, helping Rennes in their great run in the Europa League, which included knocking out Real Betis in the first knockout round of the competition.

Since his transfer from Liga NOS, he has appeared 141 times for the French club, scoring eight goals and picking up one assist, never once being sent off.
