Having arrived at Rangers last summer, Philippe Clement’s side allowed Sam Lammers to join FC Utrecht on a loan deal in the winter market.
The striker managed two goals and two assists from 31 games for Rangers. His decision to leave Philippe Clement’s side in January has clearly paid off as he scored 10 goals and registered three assists from 18 games for the Dutch club.
Utrecht technical director Jordy Zuidam was a guest on ESPN NL’s Goedemorgen Eredivisie, where he was asked about the Rangers owned player, and his comments are relayed by Voetbal Primeur.
Lammers’ deal at Rangers lasts until 2027 and the Utrecht technical director insists his side ‘will do everything they can’ to take him away from Ibrox in the summer window.
“We are fully committed to that opportunity. It was already exciting last winter, when we did everything we could. We are very happy that we succeeded, and it will be just as exciting again whether we can keep him,” he said.
There’s no mention of Lammers’ salary with Philippe Clement’s side and whether Rangers paid part of his wages during his loan spell at the Dutch club. Either way, Utrecht can’t afford to pay his full salary.
“But obviously this boy is above our salary cap, and in that we have now found a model with Rangers that is manageable for us. We now have to start looking to hopefully find a way to keep him,” Zuidam explained.
The director has also confirmed discussions have been held with the Rangers man and he’s open to leaving Ibrox again in the next window. A deal can be concluded if Utrecht can agree a new deal with Philippe Clement’s side.
“We have spoken to him several times, and he is really a guy who is obsessed with football. He has said he wants to finish the season, but is definitely considering it,” the director added.
“Apart from the sporting thing, there is more to it, and now the question is: can that come together? In that, we will look for all possibilities to keep him. I hope that will be enough.”
Philippe Clement and Rangers will have to make a decision on the 27-year-old’s future in the next window.
