Borna Barisic’s agent has made it pretty clear that a summer transfer is on the agenda, and it’s something Rangers will have to think about in the coming months.
It’s unlikely Steven Gerrard will want to keep a player if he’s determined to leave the Rangers project, so it could be a case of getting the best deal possible.
During the January transfer window, several Italian clubs were linked with a move for Barisic. It appeared they’d all been told a loan with a relatively low cost purchase option was available, and when it became clear such a possibility didn’t exist, the interest ebbed away.
It certainly wasn’t Rangers or Gerrard pushing Barisic away from Ibrox and around Serie A clubs, and whatever happened in the winter market seems to be warming up for the summer already.
Italian clubs are again being linked, and it appears Barisic is being offered around.
Sunday’s edition of Corriere dello Sport reports Barisic is ‘a new name’ on Napoli’s list of players they could potentially sign. Right now, it doesn’t feel like any interest from Naples is particularly serious for the Rangers player.
That could be the problem for Barisic’s agent, he may be able to find Italian sides who are keen, but it’s another question entirely to find a club willing to pay the sort of fee Gerrard and Rangers will want.
