Pedro Caixinha is finally close to finding a new job. After being sacked from Rangers a month ago, the manager is now about to take charge of Mexican side Cruz Azul, according to the Mexican press.
Rangers are still managed by Graeme Murty, having not appointed anyone new at Ibrox. The club’s struggles continue, and Rangers lost 2-1 to Dundee United at the weekend, with a late winner after Josh Windass had equalised.
The weekend before saw a 3-0 loss to Hamilton Academical, with the last win coming against Partick Thistle, thanks to goals from Windass, Ross McCrorie and Daniel Candeias.
Caixinha is moving on from the troubles, and given the 47-year-old had previously worked in Mexico between 2013 and 2015, when in charge of Santos Laguna, a return has been expected.
Now only a few details are left for him to be appointed at Cruz Azul, as according to local newspaper Record, the financial conditions are the only terms to be agreed. But the local media is already creating some expectations that other players could follow him to the club, and that could include Rangers’ Mexican duo of Gullit Peña and Eduardo Herrera.
Caixinha’s appointment was a subject on ESPN’s show Futbol Picante last night, and the pundits brought up the possibility of ‘those two Mexican players’ joining him at Cruz Azul.
Former footballer Rafael Puente claimed ‘he wouldn’t be surprised’ if Gullit Peña followed the manager in a move back to Mexico soon.
What needs to be clear is that these Latin shows are lengthy programmes in which pundits say whatever they want. So by pointing out that Peña could sign for Cruz Azul, it doesn’t necessarily mean Puente knows something about negotiations.
Signed on a €3m deal and with a contract until 2020, Peña is still to find a starting place at Rangers. Despite having scored four goals in his nine appearances this season, the player had fitness problems lately and should be returning to the team soon, after staying on the bench during the Scottish Premiership game against Dundee United last weekend.
