Rafael van der Vaart will always be a player Tottenham fans are fond of, and the appreciation goes both ways.
A Daniel Levy special at the end of the 2010 summer transfer window, Van der Vaart signed for Tottenham in a deal that was so last minute it had to get special Premier League approval.
It quickly became clear that Tottenham had got themselves a bargain, and Van der Vaart clearly enjoyed playing at White Hart Lane.
In 2012, the signing of several players saw Van der Vaart allowed to join Hamburg, and since then the Dutchman’s career hasn’t really been the same.
Turning 34 years of age this season, Van der Vaart is currently playing for FC Midtjylland and has been speaking to Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet.
Ask the best period of his career, it was a simple answer for the Spurs favourite: “The largest club was of course Real Madrid. But where I had my best time was Tottenham.”
Van der Vaart this weekend wished Mauricio Pochettino’s men good luck before the Liverpool match, but the message didn’t help as Tottenham put in one of their worst performances of the season and lost 2-0. It could have been worse if not for some Hugo Lloris heroics.
There’s still a lot to fight for and Van der Vaart will surely hope Tottenham can battle on until the end of the season.
