Everton have managed 14 league wins since the start of last season and their poor run in the last 18 months saw them narrowly avoid relegation earlier this year.
Following Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to leave Goodison Park for Real Madrid in June 2021, the Toffees appointed Rafael Benitez as the Italian’s successor.
Everton endured a poor run under the ex-Napoli manager, managing five league wins from 22 matches, out of which four of them came from the first six matches. This convinced the Merseyside club to part ways with him in January and appoint Frank Lampard as his successor.
On October 31st, Benitez told Corriere dello Sport the Premier League side proposed an ambitious project.
The Spaniard is yet to return to management since leaving Everton. Earlier in his career, he also had a short spell at Inter Milan. La Repubblica interviewed Benitez, where he was asked about his experience at the San Siro. When responding to that, he compared it to his time at Everton.
“I was wrong to accept to coach without being able to make the transfer market, because of financial fair play. I found a similar situation at Everton where, after years of high spending, they were no longer able to invest,” he said, quoted by Pianeta Milan.
On the Premier League, Benitez explained: “The pace of the Premier League makes the difference. Having more money allows you to attract players capable of playing with precision at high speed. This attracts fans, investors and sponsors. It’s a virtuous circle.”
