Vincent Kompany becoming Manchester City manager is a question of when not if as he shines with Burnley.
That’s according to Tim Matthys, who worked alongside the Belgian manager at Anderlecht and continues to think highly of him.
Kompany was Anderlecht manager between 2019 and 2022, initially joining as a player manager before taking on the role full-time in June last year.
He departed the Belgian club to join Burnley in the Championship and has not looked back since, reshaping the club in the summer after their relegation from the Premier League before leading them back to the top flight at the first time of asking.
That record has already seen Kompany linked with big jobs in the Premier League, with Tottenham and Chelsea reportedly having him on their shortlists of candidates for next season.
He’s also been touted as a possible replacement for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City when the Spaniard eventually leaves the Etihad, and Matthys can see that happening.
“Vincent is a great man… and he always listens to everyone. I was often in meetings with him… and he, with his great career, asked me my opinion: I was hallucinating!” he told RTBF.
“As a player, I only played once against him: it was my second professional match, I remember eliminating him once.
“Today, we stay in touch: it was he who allowed the loan to Mechelen of Enock Agyei, whom Burnley had just acquired.
“Vincent was clearly the ideal man for Anderlecht… but he left. Kompany is a great manager: I’m 100% sure he’ll end up coaching Manchester City. The question is just when…”
