Queens Park Rangers are keen on signing Sporting Gijón’s Jonathan Varane this summer, according to El Comercio.

The midfielder has clocked in less than 900 minutes from 25 games last season. His limited game time hasn’t put off QPR, mainly because of Martí Cifuentes, who ‘really likes’ the player.

It’s claimed QPR have presented the first bid of around €2m, and they apparently came up with this figure by looking at his form and minutes from last season.

The Championship side’s proposal hasn’t convinced the second division Spanish club, who value the 22-year-old at a ‘very high’ price. There’s no mention of their exact valuation.

Despite the lack of regular playing time last season, the report claims the Frenchman will have an important role in the club’s future.

Sporting Gijón’s appointed Rubén Albés as their new manager last month. They have to evaluate Varane’s situation, and are clear that he can’t be reduced to a secondary role next season.

QPR aren’t put off by the Segunda División’s decision to reject their initial proposals as it’s claimed the London club could return with a second offer to sign Varane.

El Comercio make no mention of what QPR could offer in the new deal or the fee needed to convince Sporting Gijón to sell the player this summer.
