Towards the end of the January transfer window, there was an increasing amount of talk regarding the possibility of Newcastle United wanting to sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli.
Whether an actual official bid in writing was made remains to be seen, but the interest was there, since Eddie Howe really wanted a striker to come in to help Chris Wood.
A few names were chased, but none came in, meaning the 44-year-old manager will now have to wait until the summer to get extra firepower, as long as they are still in the Premier League.
Talks with Napoli did seemingly take place, however, as journalist Paolo Bargiggia in Italy, speaking to 1 Football Club and relayed by Calcio Napoli 24, explained.
He said: “Let’s not forget that proposals arrived from Newcastle for Osimhen, but Napoli didn’t want to continue the negotiation.”
Whether those ‘proposals’ were actual bids isn’t clarified, as it’s not uncommon for clubs to suggest figures without actually making an official offer, just to test the waters; aggressive enquiries, if you will.
Either way, Napoli weren’t interested in losing their star striker midway through the season, but perhaps that could change in the summer, all depending on how much money Newcastle end up putting on the table.
