Sent to Wolfsburg by Liverpool in order to get some game time ahead of the World Cup, Divock Origi’s season started off on the right foot, scoring four goals in his first nine games.
Since then, however, everything slowly started collapsing around him, epitomised by his manager’s decision to sub him off after 42 minutes over the weekend due to a lack of effort.
This attitude is problematic for both the Bundesliga side, who have to deal with him now, and Liverpool, to whom he’ll return at the end of the season.
It’s become an issue neither club expected to deal with, as Wolfsburg seemed very keen to make the transfer permanent back in November, but HLN in Belgium are now reporting that no longer is the case.
In fact, the 23-year-old will most likely have to find himself a new club in the summer, as Jürgen Klopp doesn’t appear to be interested in his services, unable to guarantee him the minutes he needs as a footballer to continue his development.
Furthermore, the Belgian outlet report the clubs who were all after him at the beginning of the season, like Monaco or Newcastle, have turned their attention elsewhere.
As HLN explain, only a good World Cup could save him, yet his inclusion in Roberto Martinez’s squad for the summer competition isn’t anywhere near guaranteed, especially with Michy Batshuayi’s impressive form at Dortmund.
His father, Mike Origi, tried to reassure everyone by claiming his son was still “100% focused” on Wolfsburg and that they’d sit down at the end of the season with ‘all parties’ to discuss his future.
With neither club wanting him, however, we can’t see that conversation going well.
