Barcelona are looking for an ageing fullback to sign in January. They want someone flexible in position, and ideally who has a contract ending soon. A player who may be seduced by the idea of spending a short time at Barcelona towards their career end.

Step forward Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic. At 32 years of age, he may not be quite the career end veteran Barcelona would find perfect, but he turns 33 in February and it’s clear his years have been catching up.

Ivanovic’s Chelsea contract ends on June 30th 2017, so that’s perfect for what Barcelona are looking for, and as well as playing right back he’s a central defender too.

Screen Shot 2016-11-16 at 10.25.23Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo say Ivanovic wants to leave in January because Chelsea aren’t renewing his contract. It’s also stated that he’s turned down West Ham because they’re not a ‘prestigious’ enough destination.

Barcelona certainly are prestigious.

However, Ivanovic may not be the bargain basement player Barcelona want. He’s on good wages at Chelsea and Barca may be reluctant to get close to those, even on a short term deal.
