Cagliari president and owner Tommaso Giulini has told the Italian media Leeds United’s Massimo Cellino hasn’t got first refusal to buy the Serie A club. Giulini replaced Cellino in 2014 when the Italian bought Leeds United.
Speaking to La Nuova Sardegna, Giulini was asked about the speculation Cellino could buy Cagliari if the Sardinian club is sold. Cellino owned Cagliari for over two decades before purchasing Leeds United, but Giulini said these reports aren’t true, and have been made up.
The Italian side have been on a bad run of results after an impressive start to the season, and Guilini hopes the recent victory over Sassuolo will put an end to the rumours of Cellino returning to the club.
“I read it myself somewhere, but it’s a fake, made by a broken mind. The victory against Sassuolo has calmed the environment, only a medicine to fight this crap,” said the Cagliari chief.
In recent months there has been speculation Cellino could return to Italy if he can sell Leeds United. The Leeds United chief has been linked with buying Serie B side Brescia, a club he has great affection for, but this speculation has since gone away.
Cellino is recognised for the work he did with Cagliari, although his time at the club was tarnished with his role in the Stadio Is Arena scandal.
