Tottenham facing Barcelona in a preseason friendly was always going to lead to one thing: Andre Gomes being linked again.
Despite the Portuguese midfielder picking up an injury in the match and potentially being out for two months, the claims have continued.
Mundo Deportivo insist there’s interest from several clubs, ‘precisely Tottenham’, with Arsenal getting a mention again too. Gomes’ former club Valencia are also said to be interested but they’d only want a loan move.
Given the injury a loan move is looking the only option if Gomes is to leave this summer, unless Barcelona slash their price.
With the player not expected back until October, and given his problems with form in recent years, it’s unlikely Tottenham or anyone else will be too keen to pay the €20m Barca want.
That was already a reduced fee and Barcelona may be warming to the idea of a loan and then getting more next summer.
Whilst we’ve continually talked down the idea of Gomes moving to Spurs, a low cost loan may not be the worst idea if the purse strings are as tight as they seem this summer at Tottenham.
