Every time we think the rumours linking Edinson Cavani to Corinthians are dead, there are new updates from Brazil saying the Timão haven’t given up on the signing.
The Manchester United striker has a contract running until the end of the season, and with manager Ralf Rangnick publicly stating that he’s keeping the player, that had been enough to shut the stories down.
However, in a press conference today, Corinthians president Duilio Monteiro Alves confirmed that they’ve approached Cavani. He also brought a few details on the situation, claiming there’s no hurry for the signing.
“There was, yes, a survey for Cavani, nothing more,” said Duilio Alves (via Globo Esporte).
“Cavani is in the six months of pre-contract. For me, it’s something very difficult, but I have to try. Today I think it’s practically impossible, Manchester should not release him, they have the coach’s word, the club’s position, but we continue our search. The Corinthians fan can be sure that, at the right time, with great responsibility, we will bring a number 9 for the size of our team.
“I talked to Cavani’s brother about the possibility, we followed his desire to return to South America. He was never our priority. There is this doubt whether or not he’d continue at Manchester. It stopped there, he continues.”
Cavani’s wish to return to South America has never been a secret, and that’s why Argentine and Brazilian clubs are hopeful of signing him in the future. Even though only Corinthians seem to be making serious moves for him this month, we can bet that a few more sides will be joining this race in the summer.
