When Ludwig Augustinsson moved to Aston Villa during the summer transfer window, the hope around Sevilla was that the Premier League club would eventually use their buying option, and the fullback would no longer be a problem for the Spanish club.
Sporting director Monchi had signed the player for around €5.5m a year earlier. Manager Julen Lopetegui hadn’t been keen so he was sent on loan to Steven Gerrard’s side for a loan fee of €500k with a buying option of ‘just under’ €4m.
Worry started when Augustinsson simply wasn’t getting any minutes for the Birmingham club. Then, a fortunate hand of fate sent an injury to Lucas Digne, giving the Swede the opportunity to get on the pitch.
Unfortunately, Augustinsson himself wasn’t fit enough to play the first full match after the international break.
Estadio Deportivo, a newspaper local to Sevilla, say it all presents ‘a potential problem’ for the club. There’s a growing worry Aston Villa won’t make the move a permanent one, which would then see the fullback return to his parent club at the end of the season.
