In case you’re not aware, things have not been going all that well for Calvin Bassey since his move to Ajax from Glasgow Rangers.
The defender joined the Dutch giants in a €20m move this summer as a replacement for Lisandro Martinez, who had followed Erik ten Hag to Manchester United.
He arrived in Amsterdam with a growing reputation after his time at Rangers, where he had been since July 2020 when he arrived on a free transfer from Leicester’s U21s.
The 22-year-old has struggled since the move, failing to shine as he did at Ibrox, with a series of unimpressive displays earning him criticism.
Another of those came this week in the defeat to Napoli in the Champions League, with the Dutch side again comfortably beating and Bassey coming in for criticism once again.
Several pundits and journalists have been questioning the decision to sign him from Rangers, and Mike Verweij is the latest to voice that opinion today.
“How is that possible when the last scouting report was a Youth League game at Leicester City?” Voetbal Primeur report him saying.
“Leicester didn’t think he was good enough, then he went to Rangers. What plays into that is that Schreuder was in the picture to become Rangers’ coach. He knew Bassey, so I think he came out of his quiver.”
