With the Portuguese press completely on fire in the past few days, even Wigan Athletic get a mention today.
The Latics aren’t really a club we’re used to seeing when reading the local Portuguese media, but this Friday, they get linked to one of Benfica’s young players.
Newspaper O Jogo says the Championship side are interested in Alex Pinto, a 20-year-old right-back who’s been attracting attention from some foreign clubs.
Without bringing many details, the outlet only claims that Wigan ‘are among the main interested’ clubs, with a Championship move being a possibility for him in the summer. Italian sides are said to be in the chase as well.
Alex Pinto plays for Benfica B, and has made 29 appearances in the Portuguese second division this season, with four assists so far.
Still to make his debut for the first team, Pinto is currently protected by a €60m release clause and a contract which runs until 2023.
There are normally two types of Benfica players: those who the club demand the amount of the release clause to sell, and those who are easily gone.
Wigan better hope for the second option here.
