A few weeks ago, the Portuguese press started saying that a few local players could be joining Wolverhampton during the current transfer window. It would happen due to Jorge Mendes’ partnership with the owners of Fosun Group, who have just taken over the club.
On Monday, A Bola are claiming that four Portuguese players are signing for Wolves this week: Ivan Cavaleiro, Hélder Costa, Sílvio and Pelé.
They are reportedly travelling to England, as in Silvio’s case, he could be officially announced today. The right-back, who belongs to Atlético Madrid, spent the last three seasons on loan at Benfica.
Another player who’s not officially a Mendes client but who is involved in the deal is Pelé. The defensive midfielder hasn’t been much used by Benfica, and he was sent to Paços Ferreira for the last season.
The two players who are Mendes clients are the wingers Costa and Cavaleiro. The first one also isn’t in Benfica’s plans and spent the last year on loan at Monaco, and Cavaleiro went the same way to the French club, but permanently, for €15m in 2015.
Now it’s just wait and see if all these transfers are actually going to happen. For now, A Bola’s mistake was that they had claimed Julen Lopetegui was going to be the next Wolverhampton manager, but maybe the call from the Spanish national team is what changed the plans.
In any case, Jorge Mendes seems to be doing some serious business for Wolves from now on. If these players are actually any good, well, that’s another story.
