Leeds United have reportedly made an approach for the signing of Adrian Lopez from Porto, but the response wasn’t very positive.

According to O Jogo today, the Portuguese side are indeed willing to negotiate the player. The problem is his salary, which is considered to be too much for the Championship club to afford.

Adrian currently earns around €1.5m per season at Porto, in a contract which is running until 2019. That’s why the deal is now considered hard to do.

The player spent the second half of the last season on loan at Villarreal, and despite being able to get some decent game time, scored only two goals in 15 La Liga appearances.

Porto paid €11m to sign Adrian from Atletico Madrid in 2014, and are now looking for a way to at least recover part of that money.

It looks like finding a deal with the club is not a problem, it’s the player who must be convinced.

Once again, though, the background to this story would have to be doubted. Two days ago HITC said Leeds United ‘should’ chase Adrian, and perhaps it’s a bit too coincidental to believe they then actually have.

This keeps happening with HITC and the Portuguese press, and there seems to be a misunderstanding in Portugal of the use of the English word ‘should’. It’s translating to Portuguese as being something expected to happen rather than a suggestion.
