Back in the summer of 2017, Wolverhampton Wanderers made an audacious move when signing Ruben Neves from Portuguese giants Porto.
The midfielder was seen as a big prospect at that time, and it was surprising to see him moving in a €18m deal to a Championship side.
But the Portuguese media had a very good explanation about it. Porto were desperate for money due to Financial Fair Play, and managed to make the sale on the last day of the financial year, with a little help from Jorge Mendes.
The agent wasn’t only Ruben Neves representative, but also has a big influence among Portuguese clubs and had been helping Wolves to build their squad.
Now it seems the Dragons find themselves in a similar situation. That’s what A Bola reports this week, saying the club need €100m in sales before the end of June.
The newspaper claims that regardless of when the season ends due to the Coronavirus outbreak, the financial year isn’t changing, and Porto need the amount to avoid being punished by football’s governing bodies.
So would Jorge Mendes help the Portuguese side again? There are certainly plenty of options for Wolves to take a look at there, which they probably know by now, since club scouts have watched Porto a few times this season.
Players like Alex Telles, Danilo Pereira and Jesus Corona are in their prime, but young talents such as Luis Diaz, Fabio Silva and Romario Baró could prove to be good finds as well.
This is a situation to watch for Wolves, who could be given an opportunity to buy again from Porto.
