Mauricio Pochettino couldn’t find a better situation to sign Max Meyer had he planned it himself. Meyer is one of several players who seem to have fully fallen out with Schalke and those in charge at the club and, luckily for him, his contract ends next year.

At the end of April, Bild reported Tottenham interest once again, saying Spurs remained the ‘hottest’ destination for Meyer. The same newspaper, and others in the German media had earlier reported Tottenham attempts to sign the player last summer, when they baulked at being asked to part with over €40m.

The club then bought Moussa Sissoko from Newcastle United, a transfer which clearly hasn’t worked out.

On Sunday Bild report comments from Meyer explaining he won’t be signing a new contract with Schalke: “I have an offer to extend, but with my management I decided not to accept it.”

This lays the perfect ground for Pochettino and Tottenham, and now rather than over €40m, they would quite possibly be looking at under €20m. Schalke would probably prefer selling to a club outside of the Bundesliga, and Tottenham are of course that.

It’s got to be worth considering an offer.
