The decision to operate on winger Bryan Gil was ‘led by Tottenham’, who ‘intervened’ and decided to put their man under the knife.

That’s according to Marca, who cover the player today after he underwent surgery on a knee injury today.

The newspaper explains that the Tottenham loanee has undergone surgery on the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee and is expected to be out for four to five months recovering.

The ‘worst predictions’ about the winger unfortunately came true and it was ultimately Tottenham’s decision to put him under the knife.

Gil suffered a sprained knee that affected the lateral collateral ligament and meniscus, forcing the various parties but led by Tottenham, to opt for the surgical route.

That has ended his season and raised questions about what happens with him in the summer transfer window.

Girona had an option to turn his loan deal from Tottenham into a permanent move for €15m, a figure they already consider too high. The issue is now more complicated as he will now be out until August, meaning he won’t return until the middle of Girona’s pre-season schedule.

All indications are that they won’t sign him given he’d be ‘far from his best form’ at that point, but Tottenham will have to work out what to do as he enters the final year of his deal.
