Leon Bailey is in his second season at Aston Villa after arriving at the English club from Bayer Leverkusen in 2021.
The winger joined Leverkusen from Genk in 2017 and spent over three years with the German club before securing a move to Villa Park.
Bailey’s sale to Aston Villa has ‘brought in almost €4m extra’ for the Jupiler Pro League side, according to Het Belang van Limburg.
The Belgian club had a general meeting on Monday, where they presented the figures for the 2020/21 season. Despite the aftermath of the global pandemic and a calm transfer window, Genk’s losses were restricted to €3.8m, thanks to some ‘old transfers’.
In other words, Genk were able to earn from the clauses they inserted when they sold some of their players in previous years. Among them is Bailey, who joined Leverkusen in January 2017.
HBVL state Genk’s transfer policy made an important contribution to their 2020/21 budget, and it remains the ‘most important financial pillar’ of the club. Although they didn’t earn a lot through sales in 2021, they were able to turn things around through resales.
The ‘solid percentage’ on the Jamaican helped Genk earn almost €4m.
Bailey’s decision to join Aston Villa has clearly pleased the Belgian club and helped them improve their finances for the 2020/21 season.
