Jean Philippe Mateta’s impressive rise under Oliver Glasner at Crystal Palace has seen Sevilla practically abandon any plans to try and get him in the summer.
That’s according to La Colina de Nervión, who say it is a case of ‘goodbye to Mateta’ as he continues to shine under Glasner.
They explain that Sevilla are planning ahead now that they appear to be safe in La Liga and one of their main priorities is to strengthen their forward line.
Mateta had been one of their ‘great desires’, with a belief at the club that they could get the striker on the cheap from Crystal Palace.
The Frenchman was one of the favourite names on Victor Orta’s list but his ‘great performance’ since Glasner’s arrival at Selhurst Park has poured cold water all over that idea.
The striker has scored eight goals in nine games under the Austrian to date, with only Cole Palmer having scored more since Glasner replaced Roy Hodgson.
That form ‘greatly complicates’ Sevilla’s potential move for him, with their finances tight and Crystal Palace unlikely to be interested in negotiating from here on out. In fact, they’ll surely be doing everything they can to keep the striker.
Indeed the belief is that Mateta may be pricing himself out of contention completely, with performances such as this and an impressive record to go with it, only seeing his value rise.
