Watford are currently ninth in the Championship, but are only three points from the play-off spots.
Key signings can elevate the Hornets’ chances of earning promotion to the Premier League and it now seems as if they are close to making an addition to the side.
Messaggero Veneto in Italy have reported today that Udinese defender James Abankwah’s move to the London club is now ‘imminent’.
The report states that the centre-back was missing from Udinese’s squad in their last two Serie A games, but his absence was not because of performance-related issues.
Abankwah is in search of more game time and has, so far, rejected the opportunity to sign a new deal at the Italian club. That is not because he does not want to stay at Udinese but because he first wants to take his development further.
The expectation is that the Ireland U21s man will get regular game time at Watford, which he didn’t get during his loan stint at Charlton Athletic during the first half of the 2023/24 season.
The feeling at Udinese was that he would get very limited game time if he stayed with them and the player has now accepted the Hornets as his next destination.
While the outlet doesn’t outright mention the sort of deal it will be, it does point to the fact that it would likely be a loan move.
