Last summer, Antonio Barreca left Torino and made a switch to AS Monaco, signing a five-year deal with the French club.

The left-back has made seven starts in the league and has one appearance each in the Champions League and Coupe de France this season.

Limited playing time with the Ligue 1 outfit has seen him being linked with a return to Serie A and also with a move to the Premier League in the winter market, with Newcastle believed to be interested in the 23-year-old.

Italian website Calciomercato claims the defender will not return to the Serie A because he’s expected to join the Tyneside club on deadline day of the mid-season transfer window.

Barreca will join the Magpies on loan until the end of the season with the right of redemption.

It is explained the deal is expected to be completed in a ‘matter of hours’ so that the player can make a move to St James’ Park.
