Marouane Fellaini may not have a lot of support among Manchester United fans, but he has one big fan in Jose Mourinho.
The Belgium international’s contract at Old Trafford runs down this summer. The former Real Madrid and Chelsea manager has publicly expressed his desire to keep the midfielder at United, on several occasions.
According to the Belgian publication Het Laatste Nieuws, Mourinho is fully backing the decision to hand Fellaini a new deal. The Portuguese tactician has been urging his employers to sort out the former Everton star’s contract.
A failure to agree a new deal will see Fellaini leave his current employers as a free agent. The 30-year-old is attracting interest from several clubs and Het Laatste Nieuws claims an unknown club has asked to sign him in the summer transfer window.
The player’s “intention” is also to sign a new contract with the 20-time English champions, but it has to be on his terms. There is no mention of Fellaini’s conditions in Het Laatste Nieuws’s report.
Should he sign a new deal at United, a vast majority of the Old Trafford faithful may not be happy with the news. But Jose will, and that may be all that matters.
Extraordinarily frank: Mourinho believes some former Man United players want the club to fail.
“some of them have gone from players to weak and frustrated managers and they return with the status of high-level pundits”
Says lots about it.
