Óscar Mingueza was linked with Aston Villa throughout much of the January window, with the media local to Celta Vigo repeatedly reporting on the club’s fear that Monchi would arrive and pay the player’s clause.

The club even spoke publicly about having to prepare in case such a scenario happened and they needed to quickly find a replacement.

Tuesday’s edition of Faro de Vigo reports the player’s form has been wobbling, and the Aston Villa situation in January is pinpointed as one of the reasons for that.

The local newspaper states: ‘Celta misses the best Óscar Mingueza, the footballer who guided Celta in the league start with a dazzling game that opened the doors of the Spanish national team wide open for him.’

The 25-year-old has played a multitude of positions this season for Celta Vigo and had been racking up assists. However, those dried up in the run up to the winter market and that contribution is very much missed.

Faro de Vigo state there was widespread interest in January, with AC Milan and RB Leipzig also thought to be keen, and Aston Villa ‘above all’ in the chase.

However, despite the Premier League club making contact they didn’t then submit an offer for Mingueza and that was the same for other interested clubs.

Should the player want Aston Villa to return for him then a period of good form would be helpful.
