There was once a time, not so long ago, when it was widely assumed Rodri would be a Manchester City player by now.
The transfer was considered close, with Atletico Madrid unable to do much given the midfielder’s €70m release clause.
That time has gone, and things have been quieter for a while.
Manchester United were pulled into the story again a few days ago, with Mundo Deportivo reporting they’re one of four clubs prepared to pay the clause. The other three were City, Bayern Munich and PSG.
It just felt like United had been plonked there, maybe for added drama.
Now Marca say Rodri’s decision on a transfer is ‘imminent’. He could still stay at Atletico, and the clubs willing to pay his clause are named as ‘Manchester City, United, PSG and Bayern’.
A lot of Atletico’s business depends on what Rodri decides, so they’ve been encouraging him to give his answer quickly.
Manchester City would appear more likely than their neighbours, given the vast majority of the Spanish reporting has been weighted towards them.
