Schalke, who have presumably never been given the ‘look after the future and the present will look after itself’ advice, have a growing problem with Max Meyer.
Linked with Tottenham again this week after making comments about his renewal talks stalling, Meyer is frustrated with his situation at the club.
Meyer to Tottenham is a pretty solid story, it’s been reported repeatedly in Germany without a sensationalist slant, and the player himself has spoken about the club’s approach.
Tottenham could offer Meyer European football, which is what it’s believed is needed to aid the player’s progression. The presence of Mauricio Pochettino is also seen as a bonus, the Spurs boss excellent at working with young players.
German newspaper Bild report that Meyer keeps being held back in status at Schalke as the club put out more concerning fires. As Schalke panic over the future of Sead Kolasinac, Meyer is once again playing second fiddle.
Meyer has only 1325 Bundesliga minutes so far this season, but Bild point out that with him in the team Schalke get an average of 1.6 points, and without him just 0.9. That’s quite some difference and there’s frustration around the 21 year old that he’s not really valued enough.
Bild say Meyer’s camp feel the player’s achievements and his loyalty to the club are ‘not appreciated’. It’s this kind of thing which could push Meyer into the welcoming arms of Pochettino at Tottenham, or to another interested club.
Meyer is known as a straightforward attacking midfielder, but that perception is probably false. The German has this season played in that role, but also in central midfield, on the left and even as a forward.
It’s an interesting opportunity for Pochettino and it would be no surprise to see Tottenham try to take advantage of the player’s current Schalke situation.
