Celtic are eyeing a move for FC Augsburg’s Elvis Rexhbecaj in the summer window.
Celtic’s interest was initially reported by Fussball Transfers on Monday and Wednesday’s edition of Mindelheimer Zeitung backs it up.
The newspaper have a report on those Augsburg players who returned to the club after representing their respective countries.
Rexhbecaj played the full 90 minutes for Kosovo in their two-legged UEFA Nations League Play-off against Iceland. Kosovo won 5-2 on aggregate and the defensive midfielder even scored in the first leg at home.
Augsburg manager Jess Thorup claims the Celtic target told him that no one in Kosovo expected them to progress further in the UEFA Nations League. Mindelheimer Zeitung have relayed his comments.
“Elvis said there was hell going on in Kosovo because no one expected it,” he said.
The report then focuses on the growing interest in the player and his contract situation.
Brendan Rodgers’ side and Beşiktaş are said to be the 27-year-old’s potential buyers in the next window. In addition to these two, several unnamed Greek clubs are keeping an eye on the Kosovo international.
Rexhbecaj has just over 15 months left on his contract and the report states the renewal talks with the German club have stalled, partly due to the player himself now being unsure of what he wants. The summer window will be their last big chance to earn a decent fee and to avoid losing him for free in 2026.
His manager, however, isn’t focused on interest shown by Celtic and other clubs.
“Everyone has dreams. But right now, it’s all about FCA. We have eight games left. Then we’ll see what happens,” Thorup explained.
