Last week saw big claims from Italy over the future of Erik Lamela.

It was reported the Tottenham player was keen on leaving Spurs in the summer window, with a return to Italian football on the cards. Napoli were held aloft as the likeliest destination, and it was even claimed the Argentine was ready to accept a big drop in his wages to make the move.

That wage drop may not be quite what it seems, with Italian tax laws for incomers very favourable, meaning he could be paid less than he is now at Tottenham but ultimately end up taking more money after tax.

The claims have continued and Area Napoli quote Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla as saying: “The Argentine and his wife have the same desire: to return to Italy. Lamela, in all likelihood, at the end of the current football season, will leave Tottenham at end to try a new experience. Naturally the player would be oriented to joining an important club.

“Napoli, in that role, have players such as Matteo Politano and Hirving Lozano at their disposal. I don’t think the club wants to sell one of the two outsiders. That’s why, at the moment, it seems unlikely that Lamela will go to Naples.”

Should Napoli have no interest then Lamela will have to get his agent to look elsewhere in Serie A, if he’s to fulfil his desire of returning to the league.

The 29-year-old has a contract with Tottenham lasting until 2022, so will hope Spurs are ready to sell for a reasonable price.
