Chelsea spent much of the winter transfer window trying to buy a midfielder from a Lisbon club, and it appears they’re now doing the same.
Following their efforts to get Enzo Fernandez from Benfica, a club which won the Portuguese title last night, they’re now trying to get Manuel Ugarte from Sporting CP.
Just like with Enzo, Chelsea are being helped by Jorge Mendes. There’s other similarities too, one being that Sporting don’t want to accept a penny less than the player’s release clause.
Sunday’s edition of O Jogo reports the main two clubs in the battle for Ugarte are Chelsea and PSG. In normal circumstances, Ugarte would prefer to move to the Premier League, and would therefore pick Chelsea.
However, that the Blues haven’t qualified for any European competition is seen as a blow to their hopes, but certainly not a fatal one.
O Jogo say Ugarte ‘will decide soon’ so hopefully this one won’t drag out too long.
