Tottenham Hotspur forward Fernando Llorente has revealed to the Spanish media why he chose to sign for the north London club over Chelsea.

Llorente joined Tottenham in the last window from Swansea City, after just one season at the Liberty Stadium.

In an interview with Marca, Llorente was asked why he decided to sign for Tottenham, despite being linked with their London rivals Chelsea: “Yes, it was a difficult decision that I had to take at the last moment. Conte, who I admire since I was with him at Juventus, showed a great interest in me since last January. But Chelsea didn’t finish things with Swansea.”

“With Tottenham everything was easier and faster. Pochettino called me on 30th August and I fell in love, I was filled with enthusiasm after his words and his sports project… I thought I was going to Chelsea but Tottenham finally bet more firmly for me, they didn’t hesitate and they reached an agreement very fast with Swansea. They were very difficult decisions and at the last moment… For all these circumstances, I decided to come to Tottenham.”

Llorente signed a two year contact with Tottenham on deadline day, which led to Vincent Janssen leaving the Premier League side for Galatasaray. The Spaniard made his debut for his new club against Borussia Dortmund when he came on a substitute for Harry Kane.

The 32 year old has yet to score for Tottenham, and he’ll be hoping to get off the mark this week when he returns to Spain to face Real Madrid.

Both sides are undefeated in the Champions League this season, and a win for either team will put them top of Group H.
