Botafogo have emerged as a new contender to sign Newcastle United’s Miguel Almirón in the winter market.
That’s according to Globo Esporte, who state the Brazilian club are willing to offer the 30-year-old an escape route from Newcastle.
The winger has seen his game time at Newcastle reduced this season, clocking in 136 minutes from seven league games.
Botafogo owner John Textor likes the Paraguay international, and his side are of the belief his arrival would improve their attack.
They have already contacted the Magpies, likely to find out about their stance and the fee needed to sign Almirón, and haven’t approached his agent so far.
Botafogo will analyse the fee needed to secure the Newcastle player’s services and decide whether or not to make an offer. They are keen about Almirón but aren’t willing to make a big investment due to his age.
Trivela have relayed Globo’s claim and then provide their own take on this case. They also state the South American club have made direct contacts with Eddie Howe’s side, but not with his agent.
The report states Almirón ‘welcomes’ an exit from Newcastle in January and his desire is to continue in the Premier League. This makes it difficult for Botafogo to sign him.
On Monday, Almirón’s agent Daniel Campos had ruled out a move to South America next month, but that hasn’t stopped Botafogo from showing interest.
