Arsenal may have been handed their chance to sign Porto winger Pepê, with the player holding out for a team at the top of the Premier League.
Correio da Manhã cover the player today, explaining that the Portuguese side are fearful that a club could come in for the winger in the January transfer window.
He’s been enjoying ‘constant evolution’ since his arrival last summer, ‘asserting himself’ more and more and thus seeing interest in grow around Europe.
There were already enquiries in the summer, with Arsenal known to be interested and a report from A Bola in August stating that they ‘promise to be attentive’ to him despite failing to get a deal over the line.
Since then, Porto have renewed the player’s deal until 2027, handing him an increased salary but also crucially raising his release clause to €70m.
They’re aware of the interest in the winger and that some are comparing him to Liverpool’s Luis Diaz and the pathway he enjoyed to Anfield.
They believe there will be ‘harassment’ in January and wanted to protect themselves but will also need to fight the player, who ‘wants a team from the top of the Premier League’.
That would certainly be Arsenal, who are currently top of the Premier League following a superb start to the season.
Whether they remain there by the time the January transfer window rolls around remains to be seen, of course, but the player is keen, and Porto are seemingly ready to face calls about a transfer.
