West Ham United defender Angelo Ogbonna has told the Italian media he still hopes to play for the national team again.

The 30 year old is struggling to get games for the Hammers this season and hasn’t started in the Premier League since the early weeks of the season.

TMW have reported on comments Ogbonna made to Sky Italia when asked about his ambitions around playing for his country again: “Italy is a goal for me, we are going through a difficult period at West Ham but I still think about the national team. There are many good players and the competition is high: it is not me who makes the choices, but I wait for the call.”

Ogbonna started the first two games of the season for West Ham but since then has played only ten minutes in the league. At the weekend the former Torino player was again an unused substitute during the game against Huddersfield Town.

West Ham’s form in recent weeks has been up and down which has seen them win just one Premier League game in the last five. This run of form came after impressive results against Chelsea and Manchester United.

The central defender is contracted to the Hammers until June 2022 but has in the past been linked with a return to Serie A.
