FC Union Berlin have already registered their interest in Brenden Aaronson with Leeds United, but a permanent transfer is unlikely this summer.

That’s according to Berliner Kurier, who cover the player today and how Leeds will need to significantly drop their demands if Union Berlin were to get him this summer.

The newspaper explains that, at the moment, not many clubs are lining up to sign Aaronson this summer after he managed just two goals and two assists in 38 games on loan at the German club from Leeds last season.

Berlin, though, remain keen on the American and immediately registered their interest in signing him on a permanent basis at the end of last season.

They believe there is a deal there to be done as Leeds need fresh money this summer after missing out on promotion to the Premier League. Aaronson has also made it clear he wants to leave Elland Road for a new permanent home to get his career back on track.

There is also a feeling that they have a ‘trump card’ on that front as Aaronson always felt comfortable at the club and enjoyed a better second half of the campaign after his early struggles.

The big problem is that Leeds would like to recoup as much of the €33m they paid Aaronson in 2022 back, while the American also earns a high salary at the club that Union Berlin can’t get close to matching.

The latter is a particularly important point as managing director Horst Heldt has insisted the club will not break the wage structure in place for signings.

At the moment a move for Aaronson is only likely if the Germans can secure a big sale and Leeds show some wiggle room in their own demands. The player would also need to lower his salary expectations.

So, while Aaronson is highly valued at the club and wants to leave Leeds, Union Berlin need a lot of pieces to move before they can even consider him returning.
