Thiago Alcântara’s contract at Bayern Munich expires in June 2021 and he’s decided to leave the Bundesliga winners, despite their desire to tie him down to a new contract.
Over the past two weeks, multiple reports coming out of the German press have talked about Liverpool’s interest in the midfielder.
‘Thiago, very close to Anfield Road’, reads a headline in Friday’s edition of Sport.
Within the report, it’s stated Bayern are aware he’s looking for a new challenge this summer and it could be at the Merseyside club.
According to the Catalan newspaper, there’s an agreement between the player and the Reds. In addition to this, the two clubs need to agree a fee and it’s stated the ‘talks are very advanced’.
The Bavarian club are hoping to get €35m for Thiago, while Jürgen Klopp’s side want to avoid paying that amount.
If the newly crowned English champions fail to reduce the valuation, they will rely on ‘more imaginative formulas’, such as bonuses, to meet Bayern’s demand. Sport are of the belief ‘these are technical issues that will hardly paralyse such an advanced operation’.
It’s claimed Liverpool accelerated contacts for Thiago’s signing after finding out he will not renew his contract at the Allianz Arena.
Klopp has also held talks with the former Barcelona man and the German coach discussed the player’s role at Liverpool. The conversation with the ex-Borussia Dortmund manager ‘finally convinced’ the Bayern star.
According to Sport, ‘now we just have to wait’ as both clubs are expected to sort out the final details in the coming days so that Thiago can arrive at Anfield.
